Mischermann From deep to funk

Legal regulations in music are driving me nuts

My new track “Choices” is ready to hit your ears. I used a sample from an older funk track. It sounds great in the song but it made everything super complicated. During the last months I deep dived into music right to use the sample legally. Even though I registered it via Tracklib (which worked nicely), I didn’t know that I need an IPI (Interested Party Information) to finish the process. This is not easily done and takes a long time! So, if you think about using a sample, register with a PRO (Publishers Right Organisation) as soon as possible – but be careful, there are some scam sites out there.

Be aware that you are going to need some documents to and to answer tax questions. Definitively not a fun task to do. But if you want to sample other artists in your work – you have to get it done!

By the way: If you are from the EU, you can join any PRO in Europe. Check out their conditions and services, since they differ quite a bit! I singed with the austrian PRO AKM since I am german and it is german speaking as well.

Let me know in the comments, what your experiences are.
